I have learned that Doulas are AMAZING people who love and care for women and every woman deserves to be supported by a doula!!

I totally agree with her when she says "As a practical matter, breastfeeding is easier than bottle-feeding. It is convenient and free. Breast milk is always ready, always at the perfect temperature, and doesn't need to be measured. There are no bottles to purchase, clean and transport, and no formula to buy, keep cooled and then warmed. Night feedings are easier because all you have to do is tuck the baby in bed with you. Traveling is easier with a nursing baby, as there is much less to carry." I just recently got into a conversation with my SIL who wants to formula feed. She thinks it is easier than BFing...she is in for a rude awakening when she has to wake up in the middle of the night to make a bottle!!

ReplyDeleteHi Liz,
ReplyDeleteI am following your blog.
I was sad when I couldn't find a Doula in my area. But I had a great birthing partner (a dear friend). The day we got to the hospital I was fortunate to have a nurse that happened to be a former midwife. I ended up getting the experience I needed in my choice to have a natural childbirth despite being surrounded by the pressures of drugs and epidurals. Being a midwife or a Doula is truly a gift and a wonderful thing that every mother-to-be should have.
Breastfeeding is something I am passionate about. I am still breastfeeding my son who turned two this last month. I feed in public without a cover and without shame. I know how important it is to my child. Even though our doctor is not supportive.
I found Dr. Markel's statement "...breast milk has steadily risen above being mere nourishment to something akin to medicine or even a vaccine." very interesting. I knew milk builds the child's immune system, but as strong as a vaccine? I wonder what will become to that debate as more studies are done on the amazing qualities of breast milk. Do our children (if breastfed) need as many vaccines as they are getting?
Thanks for sharing your stories and Dr. Markel's website.

I learned that Birth Doulas serve the woman and her family during the entire birth process.

I learned that Not breastfeeding has immunological consequences. To protect the infant against illness, breast milk contains antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiprotozoal factors as well as antibodies to many specific disease organisms.
